A magical pair of soft rings that will never separate (without a seam ripper on hand).

The Off The Chain Pillow is the coolest scrap busting project in your repertoire. A zero waste design that offers you a joyful way to tidy up without generating any additional scraps in the process. Composed of interlocking loops shaped like links on a chain necklace, this pillow pattern is sure to ignite that whimsical spirit we’re all striving to bring to our daily lives. Small geometric shapes make up the face of the loop, lending themselves very easily to patchwork designs. This beginner friendly pattern includes a lapped zipper opening so you can always come back to grab the scraps you stuffed inside. The finished object can be ever changing - you can add more links to your chain endlessly as each link is completed on its own and only brought together as the very last step.

But how many chain links are too many, you ask? The limit does not exist.

The two link pillow shows the size large in linen. The three link pillow shows the size medium in cotton velveteen.

  • Matching all-purpose thread to your fabric
  • 1x regular zipper per link in pillow (length based on size selection)

Optional:

  • Fusible interfacing - If you are using a lighter weight material, you may wish to block fuse your fabric to create more structure in your final pillows.
  • Poly-Fil stuffing - If you wish to stuff your pillows with a lightweight material instead of fabric scraps.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

The Off The Chain Pillow is intended to help clear up those fabric scraps without producing any new ones in the process. Any woven material can work for this project, although medium to heavy weight fabrics will provide the best structure to the shape. Lighter weight cotton or linen fabrics can work, but may benefit from a layer of fusible interfacing to add extra durability and opacity. If you plan to stuff your pillow with fabric scraps, the thicker the material the better! When stuffing with scraps, the result can look a bit lumpy. Using a thicker material can help hide this appearance, such as velveteen, wool felt, corduroy, denim twills, or upholstery materials. But do not worry if you want to use a lighter weight fabric - the scraps relax over time and those lumpy areas smooth out. Or, alternatively, use poly-fil to stuff your pillows instead!

The pattern includes a small seam allowance of 1/4” (6mm) width. Keep this in mind as you select your fabric! Fabrics that fray a lot may make this project more difficult.
