Essential V-Neck Tee
Essential V-Neck Tee
Essentially, we have the perfect wardrobe basic.
The Essential V-Neck Tee is the first sewing pattern in the Izzie Essentials Collection. Every wardrobe needs those staple pieces that work overtime, the ones you reach for daily to pare back to your more eccentric, personality-driven pieces. Think of them as the reliable supporting actors that let your statement pieces take the leading role. They may not be flashy, but they are indeed...essential.
The Essential V-Neck Tee is the perfect t-shirt for a semi-fitted silhouette with an open neckline. The gently curved V neckline is finished with a standard neckband construction and delicate edgestitching along the front for that slightly elevated look, a nod to what Izzie patterns are known for. The back neckline is beautifully finished for both comfort and aesthetics with a back neck binding. If you’re up for learning a new trick, the sleeve hems and body hem can optionally be finished with a flatlock stitch on your serger. This stitch creates the look of little vertical threads on the outside of your garment for the ultimate designer-tee finish.

MATERIALS NEEDED
- Self fabric (your main fabric)
- Matching all-purpose thread to your fabric
Optional:
- Wooly nylon thread - For upper and lower loopers on a serger/overlock sewing machine (can also be used in the bobbin of a regular home sewing machine to increase elasticity of stitches)
- Heat & Bond - For ease of hemming knits Heat & Bond Soft Stretch Lite or Ultra fusible web adhesive is highly recommended! It adheres like regular fusible interfacing, but it keeps the stretchability of your knit fabrics. Keeps your hem flat, not bulky, and reduces any waviness.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
The Essential V-Neck Tee is designed for knit fabrics with a minimum stretch percentage of 40% crossgrain (selvedge to selvedge). With the semi-fitted shaping, you will want some stretch for comfort and ease while wearing, but it is not necessary to use a highly stretchy material. Elastane is not required in your fabric composition. Think more like your favorite vintage tee for fabric inspiration! The fit is designed for a relaxed fabric with a soft drape. Brushed cotton jerseys and slub knits will create the ultimate version of this tee. Plain jersey knits in any type of composition, from cotton to hemp to modal blends, are a great option. Rib knits can also be used for this project, for the entire tee or even just for the neckband piece as a contrast design detail.
It is recommended to choose a fabric below 7oz or 237gsm. Super lightweight or slippery knits may result in a more difficult sewing experience. If you choose to use a fabric on the heavier side, you may wish to use a lighter weight fabric for the #5 Back Neck Binding piece which is only visible from the inside of the garment.
Keep in mind that knit fabrics offer a wide range of characteristics, from hand feel to drape to recovery. All these traits vary from fabric to fabric resulting in a drastic change in how materials behave on the body. Each fabric may fit differently! This is completely normal for knits. Think about how you want your tee to feel and choose your fabric, THEN choose your size.

FIT RECOMMENDATIONS
The Essential V-Neck Tee is designed to be semi-fitted, with the most shaping through the bust, where the pattern carries negative ease across the full bust measurement. From there, the fit relaxes through the waist and hip, with positive ease built in for a comfortable, easy drape. The exact amount of ease you’ll experience depends on where your measurements fall within your size, so if you’re between sizes, size up for a more relaxed fit or down for something closer to the body. The shoulders sit close to the body, and the short sleeves are fairly fitted around the bicep for a clean, tailored line. The V neckline is gently curved and designed to hit just below your upper bust. If you wish to raise the neckline, see the following page for detailed pattern adjustment steps. The hem falls at the low hip, striking a versatile length that works equally well worn loose or tucked into your favorite jeans.
SIZE GUIDE
Choose your size based on your high bust & full bust measurement. The bust area is the most fitted part of the garment. If you fall across two different sizes for your high bust and full bust, size down for a slimmer fit or size up for a looser fit.
